1. Lather up the shaving cream.
2. Apply the lather and let it sit for a moment.
3. Shave at a 30-degree angle in the direction of hair growth, without applying too much pressure.
4. Dry with a shaving towel.

Just as with shaving with a safety razor, there are a few things to keep in mind with a straight razor. Pre- and post-shave care is particularly important. Before starting, you should soften your beard hair with a warm towel. This opens the pores of the skin. Lathering up with shaving soap further softens the beard hair, allowing the blade to catch the hair more effectively. It is also important to shave without any pressure. It is better to go over the same area multiple times with little pressure than to try and remove all the hair at once with a lot of force. Doing so risks cuts and skin irritation. After shaving, you should rinse your face with cold water and apply moisturizer—for example, a cream—since every shave irritates the skin.
